Natalie & Aaron's Rocky Mountain Wedding

Natalie and Aaron celebrated their wedding on August 8th, 2011 in Canmore, Alberta. With friends and family spread out all over Canada, they wanted to choose a place that everyone could come and enjoy. The Canadian Rockies was an ideal choice for a mountain get-away that all the guests could enjoy.
The gazebo at the Silvertip Golf Resort with its spectacular mountain backdrop was selected for the ceremony with the reception being held afterwards in The Pavilion at Silvertip, well known for its incredible cuisine.
We couldn't have asked for better weather, and the sun shone brightly on the wedding date. The couples' choice of burnt orange and cranberry as their wedding colors, provided a striking contrast to the natural beauty of the outdoors.
Special thanks to Snap Weddings (Photography and Videography),Mandala Floral (flowers), Mountain Marriages (officiant), Cake Creations (cupcakes), Trena Laine (make-up), DB Sounds (DJ), and all of the staff at Silvertip for their contributions in making Natalie and Aaron's wedding day so special. It was such a pleasure to work with this incredible couple! Best wishes and happiness always!
Silvertip Gazebo, nestled in the majestic Canadian Rockies about the mountain town of Canmore, Alberta
Guests wrote wedding wishes on different pieces of colored ribbon that were then hung on both sides of the gazebo surrounding the couple with love.
The groom took one look at his bride and this radiant smile did't leave his face for the rest of the day.
Mandala Floral made all of the incredible bouquets and centerpieces.
The Silvertip Pavilion has a definite rustic feel - ideal for a mountain wedding.
There were two types of centerpieces - tall vases filled with gerbera daisies tied to curly willow branches and a low centerpiece consisting of calla lilies wrapped around the inside of a glass globe with natural rock in the bottom.
The bride loves to bake! As wedding favours, she filled individual mason jars of cookie dough makings, personalizing the flavour to each guest - a fantastic and original idea!
Cake Creations made the decadent tower of cupcakes - chocolate and red velvet!
Natalie and Aaron are such a wonderful couple! It has been an absoulte pleasure to work on their wedding with them. We wish them all the best as they embark on this new chapter of their lives together!

Tips To Ensure Your Destination Wedding Goes Smoothly

If only we could pre-order this sunset for a destination wedding on the beach?
Ahh, paradise! The waves gently wash up on the sugary white sand. The sun is just starting to set slowly over the horizon, creating a magnificent sunset backdrop for the ceremony. Your closest family and friends have travelled from near and far to join you on this special day. It’s your wedding, and everything is going perfectly according to plan, or is it?
Destination weddings, just like regular weddings, are prone to obstacles. One of the problems that occurs is due to the distance involved, many destination couples hope for the best and assume everything will go perfectly in paradise. The challenge lies in making sure you’ve got all of the details covered, just like planning for a regular wedding. Furthermore, you want to ensure that you are prepared to handle any possible situation that may arise. After all, avoiding any unnecessary surprises is half the battle!

Lost Luggage
You’re travelling to a destination which often involves suitcases and airplanes. Anyone who has lost their luggage will tell you what a terrible experience it is. There is a limited amount you can do to avoid this from happening, but there are some steps you can take to make things easier if it does occur.
First of all, ensure that all bags that you’re travelling with are clearly labelled with your name and contact information. If possible, put a second tag on it as well. Also check the luggage tags yourselves to ensure they are properly checked through with the correct airport codes. If your luggage does get lost, taking these simple precautions will make it easier to be identified.
Secondly, put some of your clothes in his bags, and vice versa. This way, if one of you does lose your luggage, you still have some items to work with in the meantime.
Third, if you plan on carrying your wedding dress onboard, check with the airlines in advance about making arrangements to do so. Most brides have no idea that these arrangements often need to be made ahead of time, sometimes risking huge fees at the airport at the last minute in order to bring their wedding attire along on the flight.
Proper Paperwork Filed
What could be worse than getting ready for your wedding only to learn that the proper paperwork wasn’t filed on time, and therefore, your ceremony won’t be legal? Try and keep smiling with that going on in the back of your mind! To start with, I recommend that you check with your resort wedding coordinator for the requirements of a legal ceremony in your destination location, but I wouldn’t stop there. I would also encourage you to check out other websites, including government ones for the most up-to-date regulations and requirements. Also check with your own government if a wedding from your destination country is considered legal and if there is any special paperwork that may be required. Especially when the legality of your wedding is at stake, it is better to be safe than sorry.
In addition, make sure you note any important dates and set yourself a deadline well ahead of the final cut-off. For example, a number of countries require the paperwork to be registered 30 days prior to the ceremony. With that in mind, I would aim for getting it there two months ahead of time, giving yourself extra days to allow for transportation of documents, and possible any translations that may have to occur.
Officiant Hired and Confirmed
In most countries, legal ceremonies can performed by a judge. Most often, the onsite wedding coordinator will book your officiant. To safeguard yourself, I would ask for the contact information and confirm it myself just to be safe. I heard of one couple whose wedding ended up being delayed for three hours waiting for a back-up officiant to arrive because the onsite coordinator had made a mistake and forgot to book one.
Secondly, make sure that you clearly understand what the ceremony will be like. In many Hispanic countries, the language spoken throughout the ceremony will be in Spanish, although it can be arranged for a translator to be present at the ceremony.
It is also important to find out if you are able to have some personal touches in the ceremony. Are you allowed to have other friends or family perform readings? Are you able to have a sand ceremony or a candle ceremony (harder to do if you’re outside in the breeze)? Your onsite wedding coordinator can probably answer some of these questions for you, but you may want to take the initiative and either ask her to confirm the details on your behalf or speak with the officiant yourself.
Poor Weather Alternative
As much as us hope for perfect weather on our wedding day, we can’t always get what we want. My motto is to prepare for the worst, and that includes bad weather. When you are booking your wedding, make sure you know what the contingency plans in case of poor weather. Don't just let the onsite coordinator tell you it is covered. Ask her for specific details. If you’re moving to an indoor location, what will happen in terms of décor, etc? Who makes the final decision about whether it is outside or inside? When is the latest that decision can be made? You will want to ensure that the alternate location is suitable for the size of your wedding and that it can be quickly adapted into a nice location. If a poor weather alternative is not provided, then I would seriously consider another resort or get the coordinator to come up with a suitable plan of action before you commit to anything. If the plan is in place and you don’t need it, great! If the worst happens and there is a torrential downpour, the wedding can still continue and everyone will stay dry and happy!
Heat and Humidity
Perhaps one of the biggest obstacles couples aren’t prepared for is the difference in the heat and humidity that they face compared to the climate they’re used to at home. If possible, book your wedding ceremony for either early or late in the day to avoid some of the extreme temperatures that are experienced from 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM or so. Encourage your guests to dress in clothes more suitable to the climate. At a recent wedding in Costa Rica, the couple asked everyone to dress in white (color reflects the sun) and to choose clothing in fabrics of cotton or linen that are cooler and breathe easier. Of course, these were only suggestions that were made, but gave guests permission to dress more casually and make suitable choices for the climate and location.
As a bride, you will want to make sure you have your make-up bag on hand as you may have to freshen up often to avoid looking wilted. Dry powder will help keep you looking fresh, but you may have to take a few moments to remove some of the old make-up and reapply so you avoid the look of having it caked on. Anything that is “oilfree” may also help reduce the amount of shine that can come with perspiration.
For the groom, you may want to make sure you have an extra shirt or two, or even a second pair of pants. At a recent wedding in Costa Rica, the groom perspired through three shirts. (He brought five so that wasn’t a problem.) But he never anticipated that he would sweat through his pants as well. Thank goodness one of his shirts was a little longer and covered the “wet spots” on the back of his pants!
Finally, this may seem like common sense, but make sure that you drink lots of water to stay hydrated and possible even avoid long sessions in the sun on the day of your ceremony. You certainly don’t want to get heat exhaustion on your wedding day!
Wedding Coordinator
I always advise couples to have someone on hand to handle and coordinate all of the details of a wedding. The last person who should have to be dealing with these things is the bride herself. The bride and groom should be able to enjoy their wedding day without people constantly asking them if they should start serving the tapas or dealing with the musicians that have not yet arrived.
Many of the resorts have a onsite wedding coordinator. This person is usually designated to looking after the weddings that happen on the resort property, but while many of them are quite good, you often don’t know the experience of this person. Check websites, such as http://www.bestdestinationwedding.com/forum/ to get current and updated information about other couples who have gotten married at the same resort. These people can be a source of great information and insight. Also good information source is Google to check out what other people have said. Now, you do have to edit and filter the information that is out there, but it should give you an idea fairly quickly of whether people are pleased with the services they received or not.
Even if everything has been arranged ahead of time, make sure you book an appointment with your wedding coordinator early in your trip to review the details and ensure that everything is as you requested and pictured. It's just one more step to confirm and review the details to make sure your wedding is what you planned and envisioned it to be. You certainly don’t want any surprises!
If your wedding site location does not have a coordinator, it would be in your best interest to either hire one from the location or bring one from home experienced in destination weddings. Having someone who can confirm and own all of the possible challenges that may arise will be worth every cent that you end up paying, as the other option is that you end up doing it all yourself.
My philosophy has always been that if you have a back-up plan, you won’t need it. Planning a destination weddings has just as much potential for problems as planning a regular wedding, if not more as so many of the details are looked after long-distance. The key to making sure things go smoothly is to get the details looked after and confirmed ahead of time, and have alternative solutions to some of the more possible problems. This care and attention to detail ahead of time will ensure that your wedding celebration goes off without a hitch!

This is one of our favorite times of year and the Creative Weddings and Occasions team has been busy gearing up for this huge event. We've got some great surprises in store and can hardly wait to show them to you!
But first, let's make sure you have the main information:

This is a BIG show. Here are a few tips we want to share to make your Bridal Expo experience more productive and more enjoyable!

------------------------------------------------------
Bridal Expo Tip #1:
There are tons of contests and give-aways to sign-up for. Print off a few sheets of labels with your contact information (name, phone number, e-mail, wedding date, ...) and this will save your hand from cramping up from filling out each entry forms individually.

-----------------------------------------------------
Bridal Expo Tip #2:
Make a list of the specific vendors you're still looking for - musicians, photographers, florists,.... There is so much to see at Bridal Expo! Having a plan will help you structure your day a bit will make things a little less overwhelming and your day more productive.

If you're just getting started in the wedding planning process, then be sure to look for a event planner that seems to suit your style. Not only will they be able to help you get organized, but they can also assist you in defining your wedding vision as well as save you time and money along the way.

------------------------------------------------------
Bridal Expo Tip #3:
There will be some great deals offered at Bridal Expo. Don't be afraid to take some time to carefully consider things before committing to a vendor. You don't want to get into a situation where you feel pressured to commit and end up blowing a significant portion of your budget or signing a contract without doing some comparison shopping.

Most quality vendors will be quite reasonable if you ask for some time to think, especially since they know that if they give you the time, there is a good chance you'll be back.

------------------------------------------------------
Bridal Expo Tip #4:
Be cautious about buying your dress at Bridal Expo. There are definitely some great deals to be had, but if the dress doesn't fit right you may end up spending more on alterations than you originally save in the first place.
Unless you're absolutely sure that it's your dress, you may be best to shop in the more relaxed atmosphere of a bridal salon afterwards.
------------------------------------------------------
Bridal Expo Tip #5:
Wear comfortable shoes as you'll most likely be doing a fair amount of walking.

------------------------------------------------------
Bridal Expo Tip #6:
Drink water and stay hydrated. Also keep a snack in your bag, like a granola bar or almonds, to help keep your energy levels up.

------------------------------------------------------
Bridal Expo Tip #7:
Bring a canvas bag or something for the numerous brochures, cards, and print materials that are distributed throughout the day.

-----------------------------------------------------
Bridal Expo Tip #8:
Many of the vendors have taken the time to set-up their booths with some incredible decor and floral designs. Bring your camera and don't be afraid to snap a picture of two of things you like to refer to later. It's a fabulous way to get some design ideas for your own wedding!

We're in booth #59 and we would love to see you! Feel free to come by our booth to say hi or to ask for advice about vendors. We can save you some time and help point you in the right direction of the person that might be exactly who you're looking for.

Five Things to Consider When Choosing the Location for Your Destination Wedding

Destination weddings are becoming more popular every year. Many brides dream of having the perfect setting in a beautiful tropical location with the turquoise blue waters of the ocean lapping on the white, sandy beach! How do you decide from the multitude of choices exactly where you will tie the knot?

Many couples want to choose their wedding destination based on some significance to them. It may have been a place that they have visited in the past and have wonderful memories from their holiday there. It may be where he proposed! On the other hand, it may be a locale that couple have never visited but have always dreamed of seeing.
One of the first things to consider is how many guests will be attending and where will they be coming from? Find places that have easy to access from all parts of North America. The Riviera Maya, just south of Cancun, has daily flights throughout the year from all over North America. Try to avoid out of the way places which require numerous connecting flights to get there or have only one flight arriving and departing that week. Hawaii, a very popular place for destination weddings, may be quite far for your guests and family who live on the east coast. Also consider whether or not your wedding is a family affair or for adults only. Some resorts will not allow children onsite even for a wedding. Many times a couple may want to take their children with them to the destination wedding as that will be their vacation time together for the year.

Third, be sure to consider the type of resort that your guests will want to attend. You and you fiancée may love adventure and decide on an isolated eco-resort in a rustic setting with no electricity, screens on the windows, or modern conveniences. However, your guests may not share your enthusiasm and be upset with the accommodations that you have chosen which might be just as expensive as a luxury hotel but without the benefits. Think about what your guest want to do when they are not attending wedding-related activities. Are there golfers in the crowd? Do people want to hang out at the beach? Are there folks who like to visit the casinos? You might want to make a list of the “must haves” as well as a list of the “nice to haves” so that your destination wedding consultant can help you narrow down your decision.

Consider the timing of your wedding. Lots of brides think they will get a better deal if they and their guests travel in off season. Remember that these times are often off season due to poorer or rainy weather, hurricanes season, high humidity and other factors. In addition, many of the resort services including some of the restaurants will be closed at that time. Also consider that some resorts advertise special rates to the locales during off season which can result in an overcrowding of the amenities on the resort. Some couples think of Valentine’s Day as a date for their wedding. I have been in Las Vegas on February 14th and have seen brides and grooms in long lines in the hotels waiting to get into the chapel to get married. How unromantic! Be careful! You do not want to have your wedding at a resort where 20 or 30 weddings are taking place on the same day as yours.

Finally, let the dream begin. Close your eyes and let your imagination take over. What does your wedding look like? Where is it located? Maybe a tropical garden on a beautifully landscaped resort in Hawaii, or is it in a pretty wedding gazebo overlooking the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean? Or perhaps you always wanted to become man and wife in a quaint white stucco chapel in Greece, or dreamed about getting married by the captain aboard a cruise ship sailing to exotic places? There are so many exciting possibilities. Don’t settle for second best! With a little time, creativity, and planning, your destination wedding can become the dream that you have always been thinking about!

Wedding Packages. More and more resorts are offering a wedding package which they claim contains all of the essentials for a care-free, ideal wedding in an idyllic vacation spot. Many couples think that the exclusive package, which varies from $500 to $3500, is for their entire wedding. If you read the fine print it might include a bridal bouquet and boutonniere for the groom, wedding decorations, and a cake and sparkling wine for anywhere from 2 to 24 guests including the bride and groom. Many couples assume that having their wedding at an all-inclusive will include a reception for their guests at no extra charge. Usually this is not the case at all. The resort will often charge anywhere from $30 to $100 for each person at your reception. Why? The resort has extra costs for holding your reception and being in the business to make money, they do not offer these services for free. They usually need to pay for extra staff to set up and work your event, the more elaborate menu for your reception, the bartenders and licenses, an extra ceremony and/or reception space, the officiant, the license and so on. Many couples assume that everything they need is included in the wedding package but often  it is not. Be sure to read the fine print to see what you are actually getting.

Wedding coordinator services. Many couples think that the resort has wedding coordinator is there to look after their wedding. This can be a very huge point of frustration. First of all, these event coordinators are hired by the hotel and are looking out for the hotels interests, not the couples. Second, the resort wedding planners are often spread between multiple events at the same time at different locations on the property. Sometimes they miss a wedding rehearsal or even the wedding altogether. In addition, at some of the larger resorts, where there are up to five or six weddings a day, the wedding coordinators barely have the time to deal with all of the weddings they have each day let alone answer all of the e-mails and requests for destination weddings that they receive on a daily basis. Brides often get very upset when they do not hear back immediately from the resort’s coordinator and have to wait a few days and sometimes  more than a week to get a response to their e-mail.

Desire for a customized wedding. Many brides have dreamed of their wedding day since they were a little girl and have a vision of what they want. In many cases, the resort offers a pre-planned package which allows some changes but does not have room for a lot of customization of the wedding ceremony and reception. If you want a lot of changes to the packages, then you probably would be a lot better to hire a certified wedding planner who can help you create a unique wedding that is especially designed for the two of you. The bride’s bouquet with the special flowers you saw in the latest Bridal magazine will not be one of the standard one the resort offers you and may cost $300 or $400.

Unrealistic expectations. A lot of couples who are not familiar with the logistics and the hotel’s  purpose behind destination weddings have unrealistic expectation. The resorts offering destination weddings  usually want you and your guests to stay at their resort. As a result, you will often receive some part of a free wedding package if so many guests stay on the property for a certain amount of days. Yes, they will charge your off-site guests a daily charge to come to on the resort to attend your wedding! In addition, the resort, makes money by upselling you on many parts of the wedding that you need such as wedding flowers, decoration, cakes, photography packages, and so on. You will have to pay for each additional icing flowers on the white slab cake. Many couples expect that the extras will often be included when they are not. Brides get upset when they find they can only have their reception room for 90 minutes or will be charged extra if they want it for longer. Most of the resorts are not set up in their a la carte restaurants for large groups and you cannot just arrive with your guests in tow for your reception and expect to carry on a private reception. And no – the resort usually will not keep guests off the beach so you can get married in private with no one else around. And the list goes on!

What is your budget? Every wedding there is has a budget. Your destination wedding is going to cost you money even if there is a free wedding package included! Make sure that you have an idea of what your budget is for your destination wedding. Also be ready to make cuts if you find that what you want is exceeding the money you have available. We had one couple who wanted us to add the cost of the reception dinner to their guests travel package cost because they couldn’t afford to pay for the reception. Be realistic! Some couples can’t afford a destination wedding.

How to Relax and Enjoy Your Next Vacation

Ideas for this article were taken from an article, Planning the Perfect Vacation, written  by Michelle Higgins that was posted in the New York times  on July 20, 2011.

With summer coming to an end, the top priority of many people’s next vacation is to have a relaxing holiday. However, this goal is not always that easy to attain.

The problem is just exactly how do you do this? How do you get the most out of the vacation days available? Do you need a week to unwind or does it take longer? Should you spend leisurely days doing absolutely nothing? Should you answer your phone or your  e-mail while you are away? Or should you completely disconnect and answer all of them when you return home? Should the cell phone stay at home?

The answers depend entirely on what type of a person you are. Some people would be bored out of their mind if they just sat on a beach all day and did nothing else – they need action and lots of activities. Others would think that they had died and gone to heaven if they had could relax on a beach for most of their holiday. As for the emails, some people have a job where they need to keep on top of their emails and cannot just turn it off. There is not one answer to all of these questions for everybody as a whole.

So let’s get started in figuring out how you can enjoy your next vacation!

1)    Spend time planning your trip: The vacation that proves to be the least enjoyable, and in the long run, ends up being expensive, disastrous or simply not fun are those that are thrown together at the last minute. Spend some time making your plans so that you can compare prices, check out some of the different destination options and end up with a vacation you will never forget.

In 2010, Jeroen Nawijn, a tourism research lecturer at Breda University of the Applied Sciences in the Netherlands, studied the behaviour of 1,530 Dutch adults and found that 974 individuals who took a vacation achieved the great amount of happiness leading up to the vacation. A similar study done by the psychologists Leigh Thompson of Northwestern University and Terence Mitchell of the University of Washington examined traveler’s experiences, actual experiences on, and memories of vacations. They found that regardless of the type of trip, vacationers, were happier in the period leading up to their time off than during the vacation
 itself.

So by booking you trip well ahead, you can often get a better room and price, but you also are building anticipation which can boost your happiness. In addition, you will decrease the stress  of last minute planning.

3)    Cost of your vacation: Be realistic about  the amount of money you are planning onspending on your trip. If you spend money on a vacation that is way over your means, you may find yourself in a financial mess. You do not  to return home after you vacation to be faced with money problems that can quickly ruin any good memories of your trip. Make sure that you determine exactly  how much you can afford for your trip, and then choose a destination, accommodations, and other expenses accordingly.

4)    Longer is not necessarily better: Some people ask if it is better to take one long holiday or several three- or four-day trips. Sometime, taking a leisurely one- or two-week vacation is not possible so people need to take a short trips. Perhaps, if you take several small trip, you will have multiple opportunities to enjoy the anticipation more so than you would receive from one long vacation. Another way to think about it  is that if you take only one big vacation a year, then, it’s over and there is nothing to look forward to for the rest of the year. You might want to balance your travel between a long holiday and several short trips is at all possible.

5)   Keep you options open:The first thing you want to do is to keep you options open regarding where you want to go. You may have you heart set on Bora Bora but may find it’s way over your budget  but you can find a great resort in Hawaii with everything you want including a beautiful  tropical beach location at a great price. Save the Bora Bora trip for another time.

6)    Relax on your vacation: While your holiday time may vary in length, realize that true relaxation can’t be rushed. Ali Gini, the author of The Importance of Being Lazy, says it takes one week to get into it and really unwind. He says that people often take three days of vacation and work right up to the end before they leave on vacation. For the first three days of their vacation they are exhausted and still tied up in knots. His advice is that you give yourself permission to slow down prior to you trip by taking a few days for packing and wrapping things up at work. Build in time to wind down at the end of your trip by doing something relaxing such as lounging around the pool instead of  getting in the last thing you had on your sightseeing list so that you come home relaxed.

7)     Ditch the smart phone or the e-mail: The best answer if you can do this depends on you. Some people who do not answer their calls or e-mails become more stressed out thinking about all of the things they are missing and that could go wrong. Other people need to be connected to feel secure. If you can’t disconnect, check e-mail and your cell phone at a certain time and stick to it. Let people know ahead of time that you are going on vacation and  set up a  plan with key people if they need to get a hold of you in an emergency.  If you really want to disconnect, go to a location where you do not have cell phone access or e-mails.

8)    Lose yourself in activity: Doing activities that completely absorb us can be good for us on vacation says Elizabeth W. Dunn, an associate professor at the University of British Columbia, who studies consumption and happiness. She said that people who use their time productively are happier than people who are idle. You know how fast the time always goes when we are doing the things we enjoy! You might even want  to pamper yourself as self-indulgence is relaxing.

9)    End on a high note: Daniel Kahneman, a Princeton psychologist, has demonstrated that people tend to judge experiences largely on peak moments whether they were good or bad, regardless of how long the experience lasted. While it is not possible to end every trip with a positive note, you can plan at least one special activity such a as special dinner at a special restaurant or a scenic hike. When my daughter and I were getting ready to leave Oahu to fly back home this summer, we had dinner at one of our favourite restaurants just before we left for the airport. We had a very memorable and enjoyable meal together and one which we were able to tell all our friends about upon our return home.

Remember, that you are taking this vacation to get away the stresses back home. It’s all right to take a break from all of the  responsibilities and obligations for a little while. Everything will be waiting for you when you get home from your vacation, whether you have spent the entire time relaxing or not. Make the most of the time you have!
